Why does Williams
slowly reveal more details about Blanche?
Blanche appears to have many secrets that she is hiding, as
firstly noticed within the 1st scene when she hides having a
drinking problem. It is obvious to the reader that there is always more to know
about Blanche and Williams by revealing the details slowly is a great way of
encouraging us to read on in order to find out more. It creates a strong sense
of mystery around Blanche’s character and she becomes an extremely intriguing
character in the play.
What is Williams
saying about the position of women in society?
Williams presents women as a possession of their husband, as
it is acceptable for a man to hit a woman as shown by Eunice and Steve’s
relationship. Eunice and Steve live in the apartment above Stanley and Blanche,
a row can be overheard that is happening upstairs which leads Steve to beat
Eunice, in which is similar to the argument previously. Again it is dismissed
by others, as Eunice is seen drinking her troubles away in a nearby bar, and
the couple make up and continue their relationship just hours later. This shows
how this is a typical situation in society at this time and that it ok for this
type of relationship.
